These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's Pet Nutrition; no kennel club publishes sleep figures for the Samoyed specifically. A heavily coated dog may prefer a cool floor to a soft bed in a warm home, so give it a choice of resting spots.

Exercise needs

The Royal Kennel Club puts the Samoyed in its "more than 2 hours a day" band. SKK suggests at least an hour's walk every day plus physical training three or four times a week for an adult. Sledding, canicross and long hikes suit the breed. In warm weather the coat is a real burden: exercise early or late, carry water and cut sessions short on hot days.

Potty training

Samoyed puppies are bright but independent. A fixed routine (out on waking, after meals, after play and before bed) and generous rewards work better than repetition alone.

Most Samoyeds love snow and cold, so winter potty breaks are rarely a problem. Summer is harder: choose shaded spots and do not let a puppy lie in the sun while you wait.

Feeding

Puppies usually get three or four meals a day, adults two. Samoyeds need plenty of food when they work hard, but much less in a quiet week, so adjust portions to activity and body condition rather than the bag label alone.

Always have fresh water out, and more of it on warm days.

Frequently asked questions

How much exercise does a Samoyed need?

More than two hours a day according to the Royal Kennel Club. SKK suggests at least an hour's daily walk plus training sessions three or four times a week.

Can Samoyeds cope with hot weather?

Their thick coat makes heat hard. Exercise in the cool hours, provide shade and water, and keep summer sessions short.
