Shetland Sheepdog: size, sleep, exercise and care

The Shetland Sheepdog, or Sheltie, is a small, elegant herding dog of about 33–41 cm and 7–11 kg (AKC). It is quick-witted, eager to please and devoted to its family, and SKK notes that size can vary quite a lot within the breed.

These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's Pet Nutrition; no kennel club publishes sleep figures for the Shetland Sheepdog specifically. Shelties are alert watchers, so a puppy may nap better in a quiet corner than in the middle of a busy household.

Exercise needs

The Royal Kennel Club guideline is up to an hour of exercise a day. SKK describes the Sheltie as a dog that loves exercise yet adapts readily to its owner's activity level. Agility, obedience and herding-style games suit its agile, quick-thinking nature.

Potty training

Shelties are among the easier breeds to teach: they are attentive and love to get things right. Take the puppy out after sleeping, eating and playing, and use a cue word so it learns to go on request.

Keep the routine gentle. A sensitive puppy that is scolded for accidents may start hiding to pee; calm cleaning and well-timed rewards work far better.

Feeding

SKK mentions occasional tummy upsets in the breed, so change foods gradually over a week or so and keep treats simple. Puppies do well on three or four small meals a day, adults on two.

The long coat hides weight gain well; feel for the ribs rather than relying on how the dog looks.

Frequently asked questions

How much exercise does a Shetland Sheepdog need?

Up to about an hour a day according to the Royal Kennel Club, with training games or dog sports for mental exercise.

Are Shelties easy to house-train?

Usually, yes. They are attentive and eager to please, so a steady routine with rewards tends to work well.
