Breed profile
French Bulldog: size, sleep, exercise and care
A small, sociable clown with bat ears and a flat face. Frenchies are easy-going companions, but their short muzzle means heat, weight and breathing need constant care.

These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's; no study gives a separate figure for the French Bulldog. Individual dogs vary, and a sudden change in how much your dog sleeps is worth mentioning to your vet. Snoring is common in flat-faced dogs, but gasping, pauses in breathing or sleeping sitting up are signs to discuss with a vet.
Exercise needs
The Royal Kennel Club and PDSA both say up to an hour a day. Because Frenchies are flat-faced, PDSA notes they overheat quickly, especially when exercising in warm weather. Walk in the cool morning and evening, keep the pace easy, use a harness rather than a collar, and stop at once if breathing becomes noisy or your dog seems distressed.
Potty training
Frenchie puppies have small bladders and can be stubborn, so a predictable routine matters. Go out after sleep, food and play, and every hour or two while young.
Many are reluctant in rain or cold. A sheltered spot near the door and immediate rewards help keep toilet trips short and successful.

Feeding
Keep a French Bulldog lean: extra weight makes breathing even harder for a flat-faced dog. Weigh food, keep treats tiny and check body shape regularly.
Feed three to four meals a day to young puppies and two to adults. Fast eaters can swallow air, which adds to gassiness; a slow feeder or a flat dish suits the short muzzle better than a deep bowl.
