12-week-old puppy schedule: a sample day

At 12 weeks most puppies move from four meals to three, can hold it a little longer (about three hours at most while resting) and can start short walks once the vet says so. They still sleep most of the day.

At 12 weeks (about 3 months) your puppy is ready for a slightly longer day: most move from four meals to three, can hold it a bit longer, and can start short walks once the vet says it's safe. The basics don't change: toilet straight after waking and after meals, several naps, a fixed bedtime. The Royal Kennel Club gives about 14–16 hours of sleep a day from 3 to 6 months, so naps are still a big part of the day.

A sample day for a 12-week-old puppy

This example assumes you get up at 6:30 and go to bed around 22:30. Shift it to your hours; keep the order.

TimeWhat happens
6:30Wake up, straight outside.
6:45Breakfast (meal 1), toilet.
7:15Short walk or garden play, training. Toilet.
8:15Nap.
10:30Wake, toilet. Play, chew, explore.
11:30Toilet, nap.
12:30Wake, toilet. Lunch (meal 2), toilet.
13:15Training game, calm play. Toilet, nap.
15:30Wake, toilet. Short outing or new experiences.
17:00Dinner (meal 3), toilet.
17:30Family time, a chew. Toilet, nap.
19:30Wake, toilet. Short evening stroll.

If your puppy still wakes at night, keep one quiet toilet trip and move it later as the nights go better.

What changes at 12 weeks

  • Three meals instead of four. The AKC suggests four meals up to about 12 weeks, then three from some point between 3 and 6 months. Drop the extra meal over a few days by sharing its food across the other three.
  • A bit longer between toilet trips. The AKC's rule of thumb is about one hour per month of age, so around three hours at most while resting. Awake and playing, much less.
  • First short walks. About five minutes per month of age, up to twice a day, is a common cautious starting point (Royal Kennel Club), so around 15 minutes now. The PDSA advises avoiding places unvaccinated dogs use until your puppy's primary vaccinations are done; your vet tells you when. The dog walk calculator gives a guide by age and size.
  • Training sessions. Short and often. The AKC recommends several short play sessions over one long one, and warns against long runs or jumping while a puppy grows.

Keep an eye on the pattern

From around now, puppies start to settle into their own rhythm: some nap long after lunch, some always need the toilet at 4 pm. A few days of logs show you which, so you can plan around it instead of guessing. DogsLife does this with a tap per event and shows the day on a timeline.
