These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's; no study gives a separate figure for the Golden Retriever. Individual dogs vary, and a sudden change in how much your dog sleeps is worth mentioning to your vet.

Exercise needs

PDSA recommends a minimum of two hours of good exercise a day, and The Royal Kennel Club lists more than two hours. Retrieving, swimming and sniffing walks suit the breed. Keep puppy exercise short and avoid repetitive jumping while the joints grow.

Potty training

Goldens usually take well to house training thanks to their wish to please and love of food rewards. Go out after sleeping, eating and play, keep the same spot and praise warmly.

Young Goldens often carry things around and may chew them; keep socks and small items out of reach, since swallowed objects are a common reason for vet visits in retrievers.

Feeding

Use a large-breed puppy food, three to four meals a day early on and two meals for adults. Goldens tend to put on weight if portions are not watched, so weigh food and count treats.

Training rewards can come out of the daily ration. Check body shape every few weeks: you should feel the ribs without pressing hard.
