These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's; no study gives a separate figure for the Jack Russell Terrier. Individual dogs vary, and a sudden change in how much your dog sleeps is worth mentioning to your vet.

Exercise needs

PDSA recommends a minimum of an hour a day, and The Royal Kennel Club lists up to an hour. In practice many Jack Russells take more if offered. Add digging boxes, flirt-pole games, scent work and short training sessions: a bored terrier tends to make its own entertainment. Strong prey drive means recall around wildlife is never guaranteed.

Potty training

Jack Russell puppies are bright but independent, so make going outside quick and rewarding. Take them out after waking, eating and play, use a lead to the same spot and reward straight away.

Keep a close eye indoors during the first months; a small, busy puppy can slip off to a quiet corner fast.

Feeding

Feed a complete food for small, active breeds: three to four meals a day for young puppies, two for adults. Because Jack Russells are small, weighing food matters more than it seems.

Using part of the daily ration in food puzzles and training gives this busy breed a useful outlet. Adjust portions to activity: a working terrier and a sofa terrier need very different amounts.

A note on names

The FCI and The Royal Kennel Club call this breed the Jack Russell Terrier. The AKC recognises the same short-legged type as the Russell Terrier, and the longer-legged Parson Russell Terrier is a separate breed.
