Breed profile
Rottweiler: size, sleep, exercise and care
The Rottweiler is a powerful, compact working dog: SKK gives 61–68 cm for males and 56–63 cm for females, and the AKC weight range runs from about 36 to 61 kg. It is good-natured, brave and keen to work, and it needs clear, early training.

|---|---|---|
| 18–20 h | 12–14 h | 12–15 h |
These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's Pet Nutrition; no kennel club publishes sleep figures for the Rottweiler specifically. Big, heavy dogs often nap a lot between bursts of activity, and the AKC notes that large breeds may sleep more than average even in middle age. The breed's life expectancy is relatively short (9–10 years per the AKC), so senior sleep changes can start earlier than in small dogs.
Exercise needs
The Royal Kennel Club puts the Rottweiler in its "more than 2 hours a day" band. Mix walks with obedience, tracking or other structured work; SKK describes the breed as eager to work with plenty of drive, which needs an outlet. Keep puppy exercise moderate and low-impact, as SKK lists hip and elbow dysplasia in the breed.
Potty training
Rottweiler puppies learn routines quickly when the rules are clear. Take the puppy out on waking, after meals, after play and before bed, and reward calmly at the right spot.
Use potty breaks as early training moments too: a quiet sit at the door and calm lead walking are much easier to teach at 10 kg than at 45 kg.

Feeding
Large, deep-chested breeds have a higher risk of bloat. In line with the AKC's advice, split the daily ration into at least two meals, slow down fast eaters and keep feeding calm and stress-free. Know the signs (swollen belly, unproductive retching, restlessness) and get to a vet immediately if they appear.
Puppies should grow at a steady pace on a large-breed puppy food. Keep adults lean; extra weight adds strain to joints.
Frequently asked questions
How much exercise does a Rottweiler need?
More than two hours a day according to the Royal Kennel Club, ideally including training or other work for the mind.
How many meals a day should a Rottweiler eat?
At least two as an adult. Several meals instead of one large meal is one of the AKC's practical tips for reducing bloat risk.
