These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's Pet Nutrition; no kennel club publishes sleep figures for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier specifically. Staffies are cuddly and many like to sleep close to their people; a crate or bed near you can make the first nights easier for a puppy.

Exercise needs

The Royal Kennel Club guideline is up to an hour a day. Staffies love play, tug and fast games, but they are strong for their size, so lead training matters. SKK includes the breed in its breathing health programme because some dogs have a slightly shortened muzzle, and the AKC advises extra care in warm weather for short-snouted dogs; keep hard play to the cooler hours.

Potty training

Staffie puppies are keen to please and usually pick up a routine quickly. Go out after waking, eating and playing, and reward with praise or a small treat on the spot.

They get excited easily, and excitement can trigger small accidents in young puppies. Keep greetings calm when you come home and take the puppy straight out.

Feeding

Staffies are muscular and food-motivated, and it is easy to overfeed them. Weigh the daily ration and check that you can feel the ribs under a thin layer of muscle.

Puppies usually get three or four meals a day, adults two. SKK notes some immunological conditions in the breed; if your dog has itchy skin or tummy trouble, ask your vet before trying diet changes.
