Puppy age calculator: how old is my puppy in weeks?

Enter your puppy's date of birth. You get its exact age today in weeks and days (and roughly in months), and what usually fits that age: daily sleep, how often it needs to pee while awake, where it is in the WSAVA vaccination pattern and, for very young puppies, the Swedish 8-week rule.

Count your puppy's age in weeks, not months: vaccines, sleep and toilet needs all change fast in the first half year. Enter the date of birth and the calculator works out today's age and the figures that usually fit it.

The sleep figures are the same ones our puppy sleep calculator uses. Our guide on how much a puppy should sleep quotes the Royal Kennel Club, whose bands are drawn a little differently (for example 14–16 hours at 3–6 months); published figures vary, so treat any range as typical, not as a target.

For the potty row, the age bands are the ones that matter during the day. Add a trip straight after every nap, meal and play session; the puppy potty schedule turns that into a day plan for your puppy's age.

Weeks, months and the 8-week line

A month is about 4.35 weeks, so the "months" row is rounded. Some useful landmarks:

  • 8 weeks (about 2 months): in Sweden, the earliest a puppy may leave its mother. Jordbruksverket allows a slightly earlier delivery only in special cases, with a vet's health assessment.
  • 6–8 weeks: the WSAVA window for the first core vaccine dose.
  • 16 weeks (about 3.7 months): WSAVA's age for the last dose of the puppy series, "16 weeks of age or older".
  • 26 weeks (about 6 months): WSAVA's next core dose, "at or after 26 weeks".
  • 52 weeks (1 year): the sleep sources treat your dog as an adult from here.

Your vet's plan can differ from the WSAVA pattern: local disease risk, the vaccine product and the age your puppy started all play a part. In Sweden, for example, SKK describes doses at around 8 and 12 weeks and around one year; see the vaccination guide.

Keep the first year in one place

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks old is a 3-month-old puppy?

About 13 weeks. A month is a little over 4 weeks (52 weeks spread over 12 months), so 2 months is about 9 weeks, 4 months about 17 weeks and 6 months about 26 weeks.

How old should a puppy be when it comes home?

In Sweden at least 8 weeks: Jordbruksverket's rules say puppies may not be separated from their mother before then, apart from special cases assessed by a vet. Many other countries use the same 8-week line; check the rule where you live.

Why count a puppy's age in weeks?

Because a lot changes from week to week in the first months. Vaccines are planned in weeks (WSAVA: from 6–8 weeks, then every 2–4 weeks until 16 weeks or older), and sleep and potty needs shift quickly too.

When is my puppy an adult?

The calculator switches to adult figures at 12 months, the point where the sleep sources move to an adult 12–14 hours. Large breeds keep growing for longer; our adult size estimator shows how far your puppy has to go.
