Breed profile

Poodle: size, sleep, exercise and care

The Poodle comes in several sizes: SKK recognises toy (24–28 cm), miniature (28–35 cm), medium (35–45 cm) and standard (45–60 cm). That is why the weight range here is so wide, from a toy of about 1.8 kg to a standard male of around 32 kg (AKC figures). All sizes share the same clever, lively, people-focused nature.

These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's Pet Nutrition; no kennel club publishes sleep figures for the Poodle specifically. A Poodle puppy learns fast and can get overstimulated by too much training or play; short sessions followed by a nap help it settle.

Exercise needs

The Royal Kennel Club gives up to an hour a day for all three of its Poodle varieties (toy, miniature and standard). Poodles enjoy using their brains as much as their legs, and many compete in agility and rally obedience. SKK notes that even older Poodles tend to stay sporty and playful.

Potty training

Poodles are quick learners and usually pick up a potty routine well. Take the puppy out on waking, after meals, after play and before bed, and reward straight away.

The size matters: a toy Poodle puppy has a tiny bladder and needs more frequent breaks than a standard puppy of the same age, and the AKC notes that toy breeds often need extra patience before they are fully reliable. A puppy potty schedule helps you set the intervals for your puppy's age.

Feeding

Feed for the size you have. Toy Poodle puppies should get several small meals a day, because very small puppies can run low on blood sugar if meals are far apart. Miniature and medium Poodles usually move from three or four puppy meals to two adult meals.

Standard Poodles are tall, deep-chested dogs, and the AKC links that body shape to a higher risk of bloat. Split the food into at least two meals, discourage gulping and keep mealtimes calm.
