These are general life-stage ranges for dogs from the AKC and Hill's Pet Nutrition; no kennel club publishes sleep figures for the Vizsla specifically. Vizslas like to be close to their people, and a puppy often settles faster when its crate is in the same room as you at night.

Exercise needs

The Royal Kennel Club puts the Vizsla in its "more than 2 hours a day" band. SKK stresses that the breed needs plenty of exercise and must be allowed to work and use its nose; walks alone are rarely enough, so add retrieving, tracking or gundog training. The short coat has no undercoat (SKK), so the dog gets cold quickly when standing still in wind, rain or winter water; a dog coat helps on cold days.

Potty training

Vizsla puppies are eager and quick to learn. Take the puppy out on waking, after meals, after play and before bed, and reward immediately.

SKK notes that the breed easily forms lasting memories, which is why calm, positive training matters. A harsh reaction to an accident can stick; simply clean up and make the next trip outside more frequent.

Feeding

Puppies usually get three or four meals a day, adults two. Active Vizslas burn a lot of energy, so adjust portions to the amount of work and keep an eye on body condition; a fit Vizsla shows a defined waist.

Avoid hard running straight after a big meal, and bring water on long outings.

Frequently asked questions

How much exercise does a Vizsla need?

More than two hours a day according to the Royal Kennel Club, with nose work or gundog training for the mind.

Do Vizslas get cold?

Yes, more than many breeds. SKK notes the coat has no undercoat, so a dog coat helps on cold, wet days.
